In these times of geopolitical tension, there is broad consensus that we must strengthen our own defense capabilities. The Ministry of Defense is actively working on this and is strongly committed to developing domestic technology and innovation.

Photonics will be an essential technology in this effort. Many photonics companies already possess valuable knowledge about potential defense applications—knowledge that the defense sector may not yet be fully aware of. That’s why we are inviting PhotonicsNL members to share their insights with defense experts.

PhotonicsNL is organizing an exclusive event on 10 June at Kromhoutkazerne in Utrecht, where up to 10 companies will have the opportunity to showcase how their technology could be applied in defense.

The Ministry of Defense is focusing its policy on the following areas:

• Space
• Intelligent Systems
• Sensing
• Smart Material

Defense experts will be looking at:

• The benefits of the technology for defense
• Its operational significance
• The added value compared to existing technologies/systems
• Whether it provides an advantage in combat
• A brief description of what makes the technology innovative and its envisioned use in defense

Important criteria:

• The technology/innovation/prototype must be able to reach development within 3 years
• Ideally (though not always required), implementation should also occur within that timeframe
• The lower the TRL, the higher the expected potential should be

Event Format:

• Prior to the event, each company will submit a description addressing the above points, which will be shared with defense experts
• 10-minute pitch per company
• 5-minute Q&A with defense experts
